In 1961, the SRP District was created to support economic
development. The SRP District does not own or operate
any terminal facilities within its boundaries
which encompass substantial portions of Gallatin and
Hardin Counties (Illinois). The Port has 204 acres within its District.
The SRP Revitalization Project includes a Master Plan, $11.2 million Port Facilities Capital Investment
grant for a fertilizer offloading
terminal, roadway infrastructure improvements,
study to reintroduce railroad access, enhanced levee protection (natural disaster resilience), and
river pier construction.
The Shawneetown Regional Port District Board is composed of seven members who are appointed, not elected. Four members are appointed by the Governor of Illinois, while the remaining three are appointed by the Mayors of Shawneetown, Equality, and New Haven.
